Everyday Language
Kindergarten Readiness Activities
Introduce your students to counting, colors, size, and basic geometric shapes. In addition to the new vocabulary, the CDs provide the opportunity to develop receptive/expressive language skills, rapid naming, visual scanning, visual perceptual discrimination, figure-ground discrimination, verbal rehearsal strategies, reasoning, and planning.
Find Me
ELFindMe
Develop efficient visual scanning skills by directing the student to find a specific target in an increasingly complex field of foils.
Who Am I?
ELWhoAmI
This game teaches the shapes, colors, and numbers included on the CD, then quizzes the student with the “Who Am I?” prompt.
Match Ups!
ELMatch
Match by color, number, or shape in this concentration-like game of matching pairs. The number of cards to find ranges from 6 to 48.
Shapes Around Us
ELShapes
Children learn to distinguish the target objects hidden in a scene. The scenes become more complex as the levels increase.
Bingo
ELBingo
Everyone loves to play Bingo! Listen carefully for your target and see if you can get five in a row.
Sorter
ELSorter
Develop efficient visual scanning skills when searching for a target. The second level of play encourages rapid identification of salient features.
Evidence Base: Early intervention resulted in improved reading ability when both phonological awareness and knowledge of the alphabet were learned. Some understanding of metalinguistic processes was necessary as well as rapid decoding of single words (Brady and Fowler 1988).
Benchmark Pre-K: Uses descriptive language (e.g., color words; size words, such as bigger, smaller; shape words).
