Benchmark: Uses phonetic and structural analysis techniques, syntactic structure, and semantic context to decode unknown words.
California Standard (K): Track and represent changes in simple syllables and words with two and three sounds as one sound is added, substituted, omitted, shifted, or repeated. Blend vowel-consonant sounds orally to make words or syllables. Count the number of sounds in syllables and syllables in words.
California Standard (Grades 1-3): Students understand the basic features of reading. They select and know how to translate letter patterns into spoken language using phonics, syllabification, and word parts. They apply this knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent reading.
